about

Brent Nadeau is from Old Fort Bay, a small fishing village of 300 people on Quebec's Lower North Shore. In his song "The Sentinels", Brent attempts to intertwine the emotions associated with the loss of loved-ones with the appreciation of the time shared and the hope it gives us moving through our own lives.

He does this through the recollections and impact his ancestors had and continue to have on his life. In this song, the term 'sentinels", meaning guardian or keeper, refers literally to the black granite headstones on his grandparents' graves on the island where they lived during the fishing season. These markers are visible from the sea when approaching the island - physical reminders of those who watch over and help guide loved-ones.

The Sentinels
Words and music by Brent Nadeau

Standing like sentinels over the sea, daring the wind and the rain
Reflecting the sunlight, two polished black stones, sharing a single last name
One for a man with a carpenter’s hands, one for a mother so kind
In spite of the fury of each passing storm, together they stand for all time
(Chorus)
With every sunset a new day begins, so pray for a red Western sky
Hold to the memories of those that you love and remember when you say goodbye
That as long as you open a place in your heart for those who are no longer near
There’s naught in this life that can keep you apart from the people that you hold so dear

In the eyes of a child he was larger than life, though he didn’t stand six feet tall
But the joys of the world would reflect in his eyes as he spun stories from nothing at all
The day he passed on a part of me was gone, a pain I thought would never heal
But as the years come and go it’s a comfort to know that he lives in my memory still
Chorus
My grandmother left us when I was a child – I never knew more than her name
But there’s one part of her that I carry with pride – the music that flowed in her veins
I visit the place where my grandparents lay each time I journey back home
And as I read the inscriptions we carved out of love, I know that I’m never alone
Chorus
No, there’s naught in this life that can keep you apart from the people that you hold so dear…
